Seven Decades of Ferrari Icons

Seeing Red: 70 years of Ferrari

The phrase “Seeing Red” comes from the anger induced in a bull when it sees red, making it charge irrationally to its target. But the Petersen Automotive Museum has brought us an exhibit that changes our perception of the phrase.

On April 29th, the Los Angeles-based museum opened its Seeing Red: 70 Years of Ferrari exhibition to the public. The exhibition will be open for a year, and fans of the history of one of the most iconic car companies in the world will be able to appreciate more than ten legendary and iconic Ferrari race cars – all in “Ferrari Red.”

These Ferraris were instrumental in bringing the supercar manufacturer 5,000 wins, but more importantly, they were the culmination of one man’s obsession with car racing: Enzo Ferrari. The exhibition will be displaying Ferraris from the car company’s inception in 1947 to modern times, and they are a wondrous sight.

For example, the Ferrari 125 S, was the first car to have the “prancing horse” Ferrari logo on it. However, after not finishing its first race, the 5-speed V-12 claimed its first win two weeks later in the Grand Prix of Rome and impressively won six of its 14 races that year.

Also on display is one of the most successful race cars built by Ferrari: the 1958 Ferrari 250 TR Spyder. The TR in the name stands for Testa Rossa (Red Head in Italian) and was an extremely modern design for its period. It obliterated the competition at the time, winning 10 World Sports Car Championships, in addition to winning the 24 hour Le Mans in ’58, ’60, and ’61. Today, the Ferrari 250 TR Spyder is a rarity and is valued at an astounding $8,000,000.
