Coinciding with the release of sci-fi thriller Blade Runner 2049, Diageo has decided to release a limited-edition Johnnie Walker bottling, according to reports from The Spirits Business. Named The Director’s Cut and created by Johnnie Walker’s master blender Jim Beveridge, who joined forces with Denis Villeneuve to create the Whisky, which is a blend of 30 malt and grain Whiskies.
The all-new Whisky is bottled at 49% abv in reference to the year in which Blade Runner 2049 takes place.
As reported by The Spirits Business: “the Whisky is housed in a futuristic bottle, inspired by the Johnnie Walker Black Label that appeared in the original Blade Runner film in 1982. The Director’s Cut edition is described as a ‘classic Johnnie Walker Black Label style’ but with a ‘contemporary twist’. The expression is a ‘dark, rich, smooth blend, with clouds of smokiness’.”
“What we have created in Johnnie Walker Black Label The Director’s Cut is something really special that fans will be able to relate to and Whisky drinkers will love,” said Beveridge.
“I was truly inspired by Villeneuve’s artistic vision for Blade Runner 2049 and how it could come to life in this new blend. I learned that filmmaking is much like blending – you have to constantly be committed to creating the best possible outcome.”
“Johnnie Walker blending tradition dates back to 1820 and I’m honored to carry on the legacy and collective memory of our other past blenders to ensure that the same Whisky enjoyed today can be enjoyed responsibly in 2049.”
Villeneuve added: “Like many fans, I remember the Johnnie Walker bottle from the first film, so it was a unique privilege to collaborate with Johnnie Walker on designing a totally original, custom bottle for the new movie,” said Villeneuve.
“It was also a once-in-a-lifetime experience to help create the limited-edition Director’s Cut blend, which perfectly captures the complex and mysterious world of Blade Runner 2049.”
Johnnie Walker Black Label The Director’s Cut will be available in the US at an RRP of US$89.99 for 750ml. A limited run of 39,000 bottles will be available to buy in 15 selected countries around the world until supplies last.
According to Diageo, Johnnie Walker’s parent company: “The story of Johnnie Walker begins – naturally enough – with the man who gave our Whisky his name. The year was 1819 and John Walker’s father had just died. A tough start for a humble farm lad, you might think, but there was always something special about John. A glint in his eye, a fire in his belly, a spring in step perhaps.”
“Within the year, the family farm had been sold and the money used to set him with his own grocer’s shop in the thriving local town of Kilmarnock. It was a smart move. John had a natural gift for business. He also had a genius for Whisky. In those days, most grocers stocked a line of single malts, but they were never all that consistent. This wasn’t good enough for John, who started blending them together so his Whisky tasted just as good every time. It proved an extremely popular addition to the inventory.”
“Today, Johnnie Walker is the biggest Whisky brand in the world and its slogan has been adopted and embraced everywhere, as a rallying cry for progress, as encouragement in adversity, as a joyful expression of optimism, and as the best piece of advice you’re ever likely to hear.”
