Most of us can remember the first time we felt the call of the superyacht. Whether you’re lounging on a beach, taking a stroll through one of the great harbors of the world, or sunning yourself on a balcony somewhere, the passing of a superyacht is something special, and something which motivates a certain type of person to get one for themselves… even if it’s just for a short while. However, if you are interested in chartering a superyacht for yourself or your friends, it’s well worth taking your time to plan things out in order to make the most of this unique, thrilling experience.
Here’s our quick guide of questions to ask yourself when thinking about chartering your own superyacht. By considering these five simple points, you can more accurately select the best craft for your needs, and make sure every piece of the puzzle is in place before setting off on the journey of a lifetime!
Get the wrong vibe on board, and things aren’t going to be right from the start.
What’s your budget?
This may seem like an obvious point, but it is an important one. Superyachts aren’t cheap to charter – most companies start at around $150,000 per week – but you do get what you pay for. If you want the full shebang, be prepared to hand over at least double that figure. On top of this, do think carefully about size. Yachts range massively from small, two-person vessels to vast, 100-metre behemoths of the ocean – how far are you willing or able to go?

What type of crew am I looking for?
A really important question, as this can define the type of experience you have on your superyacht. Some people prefer an informal, friendly crew, dressed in casual clothes and willing to share your adventure. Others like things to be more formal and professional, complete with uniforms and clipped accents. Get the wrong vibe on board, and things aren’t going to be right from the start.
What extra activities do I want?
Most superyacht charter companies will suggest that more or less anything is possible between ports if the price is right, but it’s worth choosing a couple of extra things to do when you’re out at sea. Whether it involves mini-subs and whale watching, or on-deck parties with massive sound systems, the choice is yours. Most superyacht charter companies are used to dealing with the most outlandish whims and desires… the only limits are your wallet and your imagination!

Charting a yacht is all about dream fulfillment
Where am I going?
One of the first questions you need to ask yourself regards where you fancy going on your adventures. The best yachts move with the seasons, and will usually stay in one region for a whole season, so if you have one in mind, check out where it’s likely to be and if that fits with your plans. Many people are now looking at the lesser known, up-and-coming yacht destinations, such as the stunning Aland Archipelago of Finland, Port Takola in Thailand, or the island-hopping paradise that is the Dalmatian Coast. Such places offer beautiful views, a great boating scene, and the smug satisfaction you get from being there before the crowds discover them.

Remote relaxation… or the absolute opposite?
Most first timers in the superyacht world want to go where the action is, and party with other like-minded spirits at the main ports. However, some people want to charter a superyacht to get away from everything and spend some time getting back to nature. It’s up to you, of course, but this is something you’ll need to chat to your broker about.
Charting a yacht is all about dream fulfillment, and with the right broker, the right team, and – of course – the right vessel, you can achieve your own personal paradise.
